Last week, our Renewable Energies Industry Immersion saw students from Years 9-12 explore all things renewable energy careers.
Students from Glen Waverley SC, Brentwood SC and Wellington SC visited Holmesglen Institute’s Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence to participate in activities linked to various aspects of the renewable energy sector.
Students explored rotations focusing on solar, electrical, and engineering aspects of the industry, which allowed them to understand the ways that different skills can influence renewable energy.
The solar rotation saw students work together to install and remove solar panels themselves whilst also showing them how solar and batteries are used for organisations. Students also explored electrical work by building electrical circuits and developing an understanding of how they function in the renewables sector.
The engineering rotation saw students explore the workshop and machines used in engineering at Holmesglen and use these tools to create their own phone stands. In this space, students also used a welding simulator to understand the process and test their own accuracy skills.
Following these activities, students participated in a careers and pathways session to tie their hands-on experiences from the day to study options at Holmesglen. Alongside this, an industry panel consisting of professionals from Australian Women in Solar Energy, Vestas Australian Wind Technology, and the SEC Victoria allowed students to directly enquire about the state of the renewable energy industry and future career opportunities.
The panel saw students ask questions about how they can help the push for renewable energy, the skills needed for the industry, and the career pathways of the panellists. The panel, alongside the rotations run by Holmesglen Insititute educators, allowed students to gain a range of real-world insights into what a career in renewable energy could look like for them.
