Professional Development Session at Upper Yarra SC

The focus of our session was to explore innovative ways to transform traditional skills and drills lessons into more engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

We had the pleasure of leading a professional development session with a group of dedicated maths teachers at Upper Yarra Secondary College. The focus of our session was to explore innovative ways to transform traditional skills and drills lessons into more engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

Our main activity was building models of roller coasters out of matchsticks.

Teachers needed to calculate the steepness (gradient) of each matchstick and create a safety report (derivative graph) for their roller coasters. Each roller coaster was labelled according to the steepness of their design, from the Cruisy Suzie, to the Widow Maker.
